The Racine County District Attorney’s Office has cleared a deputy who shot a gunman who had just killed a man last summer.
Thirty-two-year-old John McCarthy of Hartland fatally wounded 22-year-old Anthony Griger of Elkhorn in a random attack at a gas station in Caledonia July 13th.
McCarthy left, drove two miles to another gas station, and tried to carjack the off-duty deputy who was gassing up his unmarked squad car.
The two exchanged gunfire and McCarthy was hit four times before he shot himself in the head. The deputy was wounded, but he recovered. His name hasn’t been released.
Officials say McCarthy had several mental health issues.
