
A Wisconsin lawmaker says she wants to Secretary of State’s Office to have more authority.
Republic State Representative Amy Loudenbeck is running for that office in next year’s election.
Loudenbeck says it should be able to serve as a check on the activities of the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
Democratic incumbent Secretary of State Doug La Follette is 81 years old and has held office for more than 40 years.
La Follette says he is still thinking about whether to run for re-election.
Over the years the Wisconsin Legislature has reduced the powers, budget, and staff of the office.
There have been efforts in recent years to eliminate the position.
