Today is Giving Tuesday, a day where people are encouraged to give to charities and organizations that help the public.
The Manitowoc Public Library is asking for you to help them battle illiteracy in the Manitowoc area by donating to the Friends of the Manitowoc Public Library.
“The Friends spend all year doing fundraising to primarily do this push on literacy,” Karen Hansen, the Public Services Manager at the Manitowoc Public Library explained. “Summer Reading is our biggest event of the year, and it promotes literacy among all ages in our community.”
Hansen also told Seehafer News that they did a literacy study at the library a couple of years ago where they compared test scores of students who participated in the summer reading program to those that did not.
“We found with this small study, that summer readers actually improved their tests cores from spring to fall,” Hansen said. “Whereas non-summer readers did see that slide, that decline.”
She said that any donation given on Giving Tuesday will help students participate in the summer reading program, and help them become better students.
There are also many other Giving Tuesday events.
The Jackie Nitschke Center Board has announced that they will match all donations to the Center up to $5,000.
However, when you do donate, make sure you are doing so to a reputable charity.
It is suggested that you only donate to charities that you know and trust and do the research on any organization that is asking for a donation.
