The question on many people’s minds following the tragedy in Waukesha is will this affect other holiday parades.
Five people have died after 39-year-old Darrell Brooks of Milwaukee drove his truck through the holiday parade in the Milwaukee suburb, also injuring nearly 50 people.
In a post on Facebook, the City of Manitowoc sent out their condolences to those affected by the tragedy, while also confirming that the Lakeshore Holiday Parade will continue as planned.
It was stated, “First and foremost, the Manitowoc Police Department officers on duty that evening will be on heightened alert. If there would be any kind of emergency for this event, the official reunification area for this event will be City Hall, located at 900 Quay Street. This building is in the vicinity of the event, is in close proximity to our Manitowoc Police Department as well as Fire Station 1, is immediately accessible to City staff in the event of an emergency, has the ability to hold many people, and is handicap accessible.”
The City also encouraged citizens that see a crime being occurred, along with any suspicious activity to report it to the Manitowoc Police Department at 920-686-6500.
This decision has left people divided in their opinions. One person said in a comment, “With that horrific event being so recent and so close to us, I don’t believe it is safe.”
Another pointed to the fact that what happened in Waukesha was an isolated incident, and that the Lakeshore Holiday Parade will not be any more dangerous than any other year.
It was also suggested that barricades be constructed, and a moment of silence be added into the parade to honor those who lost their lives, and those who are still fighting to stay alive.
Meanwhile, in Sheboygan, the Police Department has stated they are reviewing their safety plan for the parade, which is scheduled for this coming Sunday.
