Two Legislators from the area are teaming up to introduce a bill aimed at helping the police.
Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere and Representative Rachel Cabral-Guevara of Appleton are looking to create a grant program to give municipalities the policing resources they need to protect their communities.
In a news release, the duo state that their bill would remove the requirement limiting the grants to cities with populations of more than 25,000, allowing town, village, county, and all city law enforcement agencies to apply, and expand the use of funding to allow applicants to identify their greatest needs such as drug or K9 units.
It also removes the cap on program funding, allowing for a discussion on DOJ potentially increasing the amount of funding for the program through their existing budget, and potential discretionary cuts in other areas of the state budget that may help increase overall funding for the program, and improves reporting requirements to DOJ.
The proposal is supported by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association and the Milwaukee Police Association.
