Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative out of Green Bay is working with the new commissioner of the FDA to halt the practice of mislabeling of imitation dairy products.
Edge President Brody Stapel said the co-op is pleased to see President Joe Biden move to fill that role, with Dr. Robert Califf, who will occupy a role that has been vacant for the entirety of Biden’s presidency.
Califf, a cardiologist and researcher, led the FDA for nearly a year under President Obama.
The agency oversees everything from food and drugs to tobacco, dietary supplements, and cosmetics, and thus regulates dairy labeling.
Stapel called this issue “frustrating”, saying “It’s time the FDA gets serious about correctly labeling food.”
A national survey co-commissioned by Edge found that customers are confused about whether imitation cheese products are indeed dairy foods and whether they carry the same nutritional value.
