Witnesses say flames were 20 feet high as firefighters battled a burning semi-trailer carrying ammunition Tuesday night.
Amherst Fire District Chief Victor Voss says it wasn’t a major hazard, but crews had to be careful while some of the ammunition was exploding.
The trailer caught fire in the town of Lanark.
Voss says the fire was probably caused by a mechanical problem and investigators think it could have started in the brakes, then spread.
No one was injured and the scene was cleared by midnight.
Highway 10 was closed to traffic for several hours.
