Several individuals started their weekend by cleaning up gravesites at Evergreen Cemetery.
Nine people showed up to help clean the gravestones of our nation’s heroes Saturday morning, an event organized by Saving the Veterans.
What started as a focus on the headstones of Civil War veterans expanded into cleaning all veteran headstones that were in need of cleaning.
There are about 250 Civil War veterans alone buried in the Manitowoc cemetery, so this project is not a one-time thing.
Dan Reinke, the man who organized the event, said that his group will be back out again in the spring with buckets and brushes in hand, scrubbing off all the dirt and moss that has grown on these grave markers.
