According to the results of the Forward Exam, students in Manitowoc are not as proficient in math and language as they have been in years past.
The exam, which was rolled out in the 2015-16 school year, is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.
According to their recent data, only 28.5% of students in grades 3 through 8 were found to be proficient in English, which is a 6.4% decrease from the 2018-19 school year.
As far as math is concerned, only 23.4% of those students are considered proficient, which is down from 32.5%.
These stats do follow a statewide trend but are lower than the average.
The numbers show that 39% of students are proficient in English (down from 41.5%), and 38.8% are proficient in math (down from 44%).
The Manitowoc Public School District is looking into why students are performing worse and will address the issue.
