Every several months, we receive reports from various cities in the area regarding thefts from vehicles.
We spoke with Two Rivers Police Chief Brian Kohlmeier, who said these types of crimes don’t happen often, but when they do, there is usually a string of them, which was the case recently in the Cool City.
The Chief said that there are some similarities in almost all of the car entries that occur locally.
“What we find in most circumstances is that the person is not actually breaking into the car,” the Chief explained. “They actually just go around and look for the cars that are unlocked. You can do yourself a favor, make it real simple, and that’s to just simply lock your doors.”
Chief Kohlmeier also explained that thieves usually spot valuable items sitting on the seat, or in plain view.
“Don’t leave things out in the open,” Kohlmeier said bluntly. “Don’t leave your purse in the car, don’t leave your wallet in the car, don’t leave things of value in your car. And if you do, certainly don’t leave them out in the open where someone who is just walking by can easily see.”
If you follow these simple tips, Chief Kohlmeier said that you can help keep yourself safe from would-be bandits.
