Many people have been receiving text messages from what appears to be a well-known business offing them discounts, refunds, bonuses, or COVID themes promises.
The Better Business Bureau is warning citizens that these are most likely scams and that you should NOT click the link included in the message.
One Manitowoc resident who has received multiple such messages reports that he has gotten them from a scammer claiming to be with AT&T. They say things like “Bill is paid. Here’s a little something for you” followed by a link.
Another one claims that he is the winner of a raffle that he never entered. The citizen reported receiving the same message multiple months in a row, and both times he was listed as a winner alongside an “Angela Clark”.
One thing to remember is that when a business, namely a phone service provider messages you, more often than not they use a short form number, as opposed to a traditional number.
Other business names that have been used are Verizon and Hulu.
If you receive a message from someone claiming to be with AT&T or Verizon, you are encouraged to forward the messages to 7726.
