A survey of the bat population conducted at the Woodland Dunes Nature Center is showing a promising future for the animals.
For the past seven years, a fungal disease has been crippling the bat population in the area, with four of the eight cave-dwelling bat species now listed as threatened.
However, according to this survey conducted with an acoustic monitoring device, five different species now occupy the Two Rivers area, totaling around 460 individual bats.
The most abundant species is the Hoary Bat, followed by the Big and Little Brown variations.
While bats are known as the rats of the sky, it should be noted that the increased presence of these animals will help with those pesky mosquitoes, as they can consume up to thousands of insects each and every evening.
