As students are now back in classrooms in the Manitowoc Public School District, officials have a better idea of how well they are doing enrollment-wise.
We spoke with Superintendent Mark Holzman, who said they are doing quite well.
“We are seeing some really great positive trends,” he said. “One of the things that’s always challenging is predicting how many kids will come back. We have a good idea, but through the pandemic, there were lots of changes.”
Holzman said that they are seeing roughly 100 more students this year than they had last year.

New this year is the virtual school option at McKinley Academy.
“We thought that there was going to be a great opportunity to engage some of our families that wanted 100% virtual or some virtual learning opportunities,” the superintendent said. “To date that enrollment at McKinley Academy is over 180 students.”
Holzman also explained that the upward trend this year could be partially due to some students returning to public school after being homeschooled during the pandemic, but part of it is new families moving into the district.
Some adjustments are being made in the staffing of the schools in order to make sure each student has the best possible chance to succeed.
