Nick Mueller
The following article was written by Cheryl Mahowald for the Lakeshore Artists Guild.
Manitowoc native, Nick Mueller will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Art Slam reception. He will be presenting a slide show about the history of how architecture and art shaped American cities and how it influences our present-day community. Nick’s presentation will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 17, 2021.
Nick is in a unique position to discuss the changes to Manitowoc’s downtown architecture and public art. Since growing up here, graduating from Lincoln High School, and attending UW Milwaukee for an advanced degree in Architecture, he has witnessed many changes to the city and been a major force in the new projects enhancing our community. His influence can be seen in many delightful improvements: the planters and hanging baskets beautifying 8th Street; the Ruth West mural; the restroom pavilion on Maritime Drive; the fountain and arbor by the Maritime Museum; the renovated bus shelter and clock across from the library; as well as many others.

Beautification is a significant part of creating a sense of place and a thriving downtown. Nick has been instrumental in facilitating opportunities for artists and expanding the facade grants for local businesses. To paraphrase: “we’ve taken some of the ugliest ducklings and turned them into swans.”
