A spokesperson for the Fox Valley Metro Police Department says Little Chute and Kimberly schools only have 10 crossing guards and no backups right now.
When a guard calls in sick, patrol officers have to take over those posts to get students to and from their schools safely.
Officers had to fill in for Little Chute guards on the first day.
In some cases, where an emergency is happening at another location, it’s possible the kids will have to cross on their own.
Crossing guard Linda Doering has worked for Little Chute schools for 30 years.
She tells reporters things went fairly well on the first day of class, but a lot of drivers were disregarding school zone signs.
