The 2020 Census information has been passed along to state legislators, and according to 9th District Senator Devin LeMahieu, Wisconsin grew over the last 10 years.
The Senate Majority Leader explained to Seehafer News that they received the census information a couple of weeks ago, and he generally likes what he saw.
“Wisconsin grew by 3.5%, and a lot of that was actually in the suburban areas of Dane County and the Fox Valley,” LeMahieu said. “Some of the more urban areas actually shrank like Milwaukee. Manitowoc County I think was down a little bit.”
The next step for state legislators is to redraw the district maps to ensure each representative in the Senate and Assembly has roughly the same number of constituents.
“If people want to put public input into it, there is actually a website where you can draw your own map, and see how hard it is to draw districts,” LeMahieu explained. “It is DrawYourDistrictWisconsin.com.”
LeMahieu said that the redrawing process has begun and hopes that the maps will be completed by the next election cycle, which will include a Gubernatorial race in 2022.
