Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former bishop of the La Crosse Diocese, is in serious condition with COVID-19. Seventy-three-old Burke is a conservative critic of Pope Francis who’s also been skeptical of the COVID-19 vaccine.
His staff said he caught the virus last weekend and was hospitalized on a ventilator. A new post on the webpage of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse stated that he was in in serious, but stable condition, and sedated.
Burke was born in Richland Center and served as bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse from 1995 to 2003. Pope Francis issued an appeal today (Wednesday) urging people to get vaccinated.
