Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
Drugs remain a huge problem all over, and the biggest issue in Manitowoc County is Fentanyl.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig was on WOMT’s Be My Guest program recently, where he explained that Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, which is fifty times more potent than morphine.
In fact, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office recently released a video of their deputies searching a vehicle, when one of them noticed a powder, later identified as fentanyl, clouding up the air.
“You see it right on body cam, the officer drops over. He Oded just from the aerosol powder that was in the air,” Sheriff Hartwig explained. “This stuff is extremely dangerous, and it’s getting mixed in with a lot of different things.”
One of those drugs that Fentanyl is being mixed with is a popular recreational drug, marijuana.
Hartwig explained that they recently had an officer on a traffic stop confiscate some marijuana, and one of the bags was darker than the other.
Hartwig said, “Apparently now, one of the new things is spraying Fentanyl on marijuana.”
This is a big problem in Michigan, where recreational marijuana is legal. Hartwig said that deals assume that law enforcement will not check bags of marijuana, since it is not illegal to possess there.
The Sheriff did say the Drug Unit saw a bit of a slow down last year due to people staying home during the pandemic, but the drug trade was still going on.
