A relatively short stretch of a much-traveled roadway in the City of Manitowoc will be repaved starting Tuesday.
Greg Minikel, Engineering Division Manager for the Department of Public Infrastructure, tells us that Vinton Construction Company will do the project on Washington Street between South 15th and 18th Streets.
Minikel said, “It has a lot of joint failures either from frost or settlement. Much of the pavement has either heaved up or settled, causing some big bumps.”
Minikel says the 3-block stretch of Washington will be closed in both directions and a detour route will be set up at South 21st Street to Franklin, down to 14th, and then back to Washington Street.
Minikel explains that part of the reconstruction involves the replacement of a sewer.
“There’s a small short sanitary sewer relay, a little piece of bad pipe. They’ll start milling the entire roadway to mill and grind off all existing asphalt. Then, we want to take a look at the concrete underneath there and determine how much of that should come out.”
The engineering division manager also stated Vinton crews will perform some curb and gutter replacement as well as creating sidewalk ramps at intersections. The project is scheduled to begin on July 6th with an expected completion date of July 27th.
The construction cost is just over $265,000.
