For some veterans, or citizens who have undergone a traumatic experience, hearing fireworks exploding may result in some sort of Post Traumatic Stress episode or flashback to that traumatic event.
However, Manitowoc County Veteran Service Officer Todd Brehmer feels like if that’s how you want to celebrate Independence Day, then go for it.
“Independence Day is probably the most important holiday, as far as our nation is concerned,” he told Seehafer News. “If lighting off fireworks and spending time with family and friends is how you want to celebrate, then by all means please do that.”
That being said, you should still be considerate of those you know that may experience those feelings. Brehmer asked that you “don’t tease them, don’t make fun of them, and don’t call them out.”
As for those who know they are going to have a bad experience with fireworks, Brehmer suggests that you plan ahead.
“You can find other ways to celebrate,” he said. “There’s no reason you can’t get together with friends and family and play cards…instead of exposing yourself to those sounds.”
