After an overnight stop in Manitowoc, the four men and one female, all students at St. Norbert College, are now on their way to Sheboygan, with the ultimate goal of marching to Milwaukee.
Sam Skiff is leading the group, which also consists of Nicholas Hanke, Alex Kaufamn, Andrew Lopez and Lydia Myszka, who stepped off this morning (June 30th) at about 8:30 from the BP Gas Station located next to UW Green Bay Manitowoc Campus.
Skiff explained why they are marching the 140 miles to Milwaukee.
“We are partnering with an organization local to Green Bay called the 4th HOOAH,” he told Seehafer News. “They do great work with suicide prevention, and PTSD, offering them support for that. Not only for the veteran but for their family, which is super important.”
Supporting veterans is a cause very near and dear to Skiff.
“My dad’s a veteran, my brother’s a veteran, and they are two of the greatest people I know,” Skiff explained. “Seeing what they have to do, just how selfless they are, going oversees, protecting the country, protecting us and our freedoms, and then coming back and not expecting anything in return, it’s really incredible. It inspired me to join the military as well.”
As for their goal for today, they intend on making it to Sheboygan.
“We are staying at the Sheboygan Fire Station tonight. It’s about a 24-mile walk,” he said. “We will take breaks along the way of course. Our feet are hurting, and we have blisters already but it will be a good day.”
