Many Police and Sheriff’s Departments across the country are struggling to find people to fill their available positions. This is due to recent resentment raised toward police, but also due to the fact that people that are interested in that line of work can get paid more in the private sector.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig says that they have been lucky in the personnel department.
“Between 2018 and 2019 we ended up hiring 52 people, so we were doing lots of backgrounds,” Hartwig explained. “This past year, during COVID, I only had to hire one deputy, but now we are starting to see some retirements coming up.”
One of those people retiring is Deputy Eric Glaeser, who has been with the Department for 28 years.

“He was one of our Team Leaders on our dive team…and is now working as Baliff at the Courthouse,” Hartwig said. “July 1st is going to be his last day on duty, and he will be sailing off into the sunset. We wish him and his family the best in retirement.”
However, Hartwig said they also just hired a new officer, Nate Stever who, as Sheriff Hartwig explained, “came over to us from the Two Rivers Police Department. He was working in the Drug Unit and was a member of our SWAT team. We got a real good pick up there, but we are going to have to hire another one soon.”
Hartwig also said that six of his employees are in a Military Reserve branch, and two of them were recently deployed overseas. One of those two has returned safely, and is back at work, that being Deputy Kasey Noodles.
There are currently two positions in the Department that Hartwig is looking to fill. Those are for a patrol deputy, and for a female corrections officer.
