Manitowoc County’s Representative in the State Assembly has voiced his support of police departments throughout the state as he voted in favor of a bill that decreases shared revenue payments to municipalities who cut funding for their police departments.
Rep. Paul Tittl explained that the cut to the state shared revenue payments would be equal to the amount to the department.
He also said that the bill, “does not prohibit communities from defunding police, but if a community feels they no longer need as many police officers, they certainly don’t need the funds to pay for them.”
An amendment specifies fire and EMS positions also cannot be cut without a reduction in shared revenue.
Additionally, municipalities with fewer than 30 law enforcement officers, fire department members, or emergency medical responders would be exempt under the amendment.
