Karl M. Hess
For the family and friends of Richard and Jocelyn Miller, this day was a long time coming.
The trial for Karl Hess started yesterday (June 22nd) for the double murder which happened nearly three years ago.
Richard and his daughter Jocelyn were murdered in their Dale Street home in Manitowoc in September of 2018, and six months later, Hess was arrested thanks to the public’s help and a security video from a neighbor.
The trial has taken so long to get underway because Hess initially entered a plea of not guilty due to mental disease or defect, but withdrew the plea in October of 2019.
Then the defense requested a delay in the trial, Hess requested new lawyers, waived his right to a jury trial, and again withdrew the waiver.
The trial was then pushed back due to restrictions at the courthouse that began last March, and Hess again requested new lawyers.
He is facing two counts of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide with Use of a Dangerous Weapon and will face a mandatory life sentence if found guilty on either count.
