Earlier this week we learned that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation approved a $98,000 Brownfield Site Assessment Grant for the City of Manitowoc. This grant is to be used to pay for an environmental survey of the land just west of North 10th Street.
Mayor Justin Nickels spoke with Seehafer News, where he voiced his appreciation for all the support the state has given the city as they work on the River Point District.
“They are really excited about this project, and have been since day one,” Nickels said. “I just want to give a huge shout-out to the State of Wisconsin. They saw the same vision that we saw for this property.”
As for the assessment, Mayor Nickels explained that it is standard procedure to conduct an environmental assessment on “any new property you buy, especially one was industrial for most of it’s life.”
The assessment will, as Nickels put it, “ensure that all the environmental remediation is taken care of…that any concerns are addressed so the State can Officially sign off on us building.”
Nickels assured us that this will not stop any planned projects, namely the planned apartment structure, or the Petskull Brewing project.
He also said that Stantec out of De Pere will conduct the survey.
“They helped us basically draft what we needed to send to the state to receive this grant,” Nickels told us. “You have undoubtedly seen them around town at the Mirro site as well, but mostly this site.”
The City of Manitowoc purchased the River Point District in March of 2019, when it was known as the CN Peninsula.
Since that time they have been planning the redevelopment of that area, most recently announcing the planned construction of the River North Apartment Building, which will house 81 market-rate apartments. Click here for more information on that project.
