The Kewaunee Power Station has been sold.
Energy Solutions of Salt Lake City Utah has entered into a definitive agreement with Dominion Energy to acquire the Kewaunee Power Station in Carlton.
Energy Solutions offers customers a “full range” of integrated services and solutions including various entities of nuclear operations. Their goal is to completely decommission the site within ten years instead of the 40 to 50 years remaining under Dominion’s plan.
The 566 megawatt Kewaunee Power Station went off line in May of 2013.
Dominion Energy completed the used nuclear fuel transfer to the onsite dry fuel facility in June 2017 and the remaining decommissioning work will be completed by Energy Solutions. They will spend approximately $85 million annually and create about 200 new jobs in Kewaunee County.
President and CEO of Energy Solutions Ken Robuck stated in a news release, “We appreciate the confidence Dominion Energy has in our company by entering into this contract. This project will fit nicely within our decommissioning project portfolio and we are looking forward to applying our industry Leading decommissioning and waste management experience to this project.”
Kewaunee County Administrator Scott Feldt states “I look forward to working with Energy Solutions as they complete the decommissioning process. Dominion Energy has been a strong and committed partner in Kewaunee County. We are thankful for that relationship and we look forward to our new partnership with Energy Solutions.”
There are no immediate plans for the 900 acres of land when the plant is totally taken down.
Work is expected to begin in 2022.
