The Two Rivers man who was convicted for the 2018 drunk driving death of the Roncalli Track and Field Coach has been sentenced.
Timothy Hallet was before Judge Jerilyn Dietz at 10:00 this morning (May 11th) as the family and friend of Christopher Klein sat behind him. Judge Dietz sentenced Hallet to 26 years imprisonment, and 20 years of extended supervision.
Before the sentence was announced, Klein’s mother spoke, fighting back tears she said bluntly, “Timothy Hallet, who the hell do you think you are? You put so many people’s lives in danger on that night, December 16th 2018, and then you murdered my son. You left your house on December 16th, 2018 with full knowledge that you did not have a license to drive to meet some of your friends to party. Then you get behind the wheel and drive drunk home. When things get bad, you thought that running from the police would be a great idea. Wrong!”
The wheelchair-bound Hallet stared at the table in front of him with tears in his eyes as two other witness impact statements were read.
His defense Attorney, Ann Larson asked Judge Dietz to consider the fact that the 50-year-old had suffered severe injuries in the crash, including, “A shattered tibia, broken femur, broken hip, a crushed pelvis that is only pinned together and is a non-union fracture. He ruptured his aorta, bruised his heart, kidneys, liver, and suffered internal bleeding. He broke his sternum, and his ribs are separated. Both of his arms were broken.”
When he was given the opportunity to speak, Hallet turned directly to Klein’s mother with tears streaming down his face and said, “My family wanted to be here. I begged them not to because you people don’t deserve to hear anything good about me.”
The prosecution, which included District Attorney Jackie LaBre, suggested a sentence of 26 years imprisonment as Christopher Klein, the victim in the crash, was nearly 26 when he died.
His sentence was ordered to begin today (May 11th).
