It was recently announced that Crystal Anhalt, a Junior at Mishicot High School, was selected to be a part of the Youth Agriculture Council.
The Council consists of 15 high school-aged members from all over the state, who look to be the future of agriculture in Wisconsin.
We spoke with Crystal who said she wanted to be a part of the Council so she can learn more about the industry.
“In the future, I would like to be an Ag teacher,” she explained. “Wherever I start teaching, I would like to have some knowledge on Wisconsin Agriculture throughout the state, so that I can tell them not only about my own experiences, but different experiences I see throughout the state.”
Crystal’s parents own the Homestead Ranch Dairy Farm, so she knows a lot about the dairy aspect of the industry but wants to become more educated on the other aspects, such as crop production.
Crystal spoke highly of the Ag program at Mishicot High School and her instructor Jamie Propson, saying she “does a really good job teaching us about agriculture, and she also sends out opportunities for us, like applying for the Wisconsin Youth AG Council.”
Those who frequent the animal shows at the Manitowoc County Fair may be familiar with Crystal, as she has shown cattle there for the past several years.
“The first year I got champion for our dairy steers,” she told us. “The last year I showed, not last year bit the year before that, I did pretty well in showmanship considering it’s not my main focus. It’s just having a connection with the animal.”
Crystal told Seehafer News that she intends on attending UW Rivers Falls after she graduates for a couple of reasons. First, she wants to follow in Propson and her sister’s footsteps, and she wants to be an ag teacher, and they are one of only two colleges in the state that offers that program.
Crystal will begin her term on the Youth Ag Council in September.
