The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission has voted unanimously to ban the use of chokeholds in all situations.
The commission had voted last December to ban them except when the officer’s life was in danger. Thursday’s vote eliminated that exception. Activists had demanded the ban, but the union representing the city’s police officers says there needs to be a way for the officers to protect themselves.
The union is considering a challenge of the ban.
