The City of Manitowoc has come a long way over the past decade.
From losing a couple of major businesses and having very little saved in the reserve fund, to today, where the reserve fund is actively being used to fix Washington Street, and companies are actively seeking Manitowoc as a City in which to expand their operations.
As for what’s next for the City, Mayor Justin Nickels told Seehafer News, “It’s kinda just continuing what we have already started. There’s a lot of projects happening. From downtown, the River Point District which is being built out as we speak. The Industrial Park is basically full. We are already talking about expanding the Industrial Park into the land that we purchased off of Hecker and Viebahn a couple of years ago…We already have interest in that land.”
He also pointed to the potential development of the former Mid-Cities Mall site.
Despite all the progress that has been made under his supervision, Mayor Nickels emphasized that “a new term brings new opportunities. Even though I have been here for three terms already and 12 years, doesn’t mean I want to continue as is.”
Nickels said that diversity and inclusion will be a major theme of the next few years, as will be the fixing of roadways. Governor Tony Evers and DOT Secretary Designee Craig Thompson recently addressed the reconstruction of Washington Street, which you can click here to read more about.
