As anyone who has lived in Wisconsin for an extended period of time can confirm, the four-season in the state are Football, Winter, Still Winter, and Construction.
We are now in that final season, as there are a multitude of road closures scheduled in Manitowoc. Mayor Justin Nickels recently told us that some of these projects will begin rather soon.
“Starting next week Monday…North 10th Street between York Street and Maritime Drive will be closed to all traffic,” Nickels said. “Traffic will be rerouted down York onto 9th Street then back to Maritime Drive, where there will be a piece of the road that will be open to get back onto 10th Street.”
That is a very important intersection for the future of the downtown area as it will be the main entrance into the River Point District. Also, the eastern lane of a portion of Maritime Drive will be closed for the widening of the Mariners Trail, as will the section of Magnolia Avenue between North 10th and 18th Streets. “This is a good day because it is only one day,” Nickels explained. “The reason for it, and I’m sure we will all be happy, is they are removing the railroad tracks in that area.”
Those closures are all starting next week, however, Mayor Nickels is also reminding citizens that the portion of Washington Street between South 15th and 18th Streets will also be repaved this summer. He said that project will begin “in the near future”.
