Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Johnathan Schwede and Sheriff’s Detective Brett Oswald are co-recipients of the 2020 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig says the selection committee had a tie on two separate votes so it was decided to honor both men of which Hartwig says both are “well deserving.”
Deputy Schwede was the first officer on the scene to a motorcycle accident in the City of Manitowoc in May of 2020. He immediately tended to the victim and utilized his tourniquet on a severe leg injury which was paramount on saving the victim’s life. Deputy Schwede’s quick-thinking life-saving actions were recognized by the Common Council.
Detective Oswald has been with The Sheriff’s Department since 2012 serving as a Detective since 2018. He has an extremely delicate and significant task as a child crimes Investigator and has also been a SWAT Team Member, field training officer, D.A.R.E. Instructor and Sheriff’s Association Vice President.
Sheriff Hartwig adds “One of the greatest honors for me as Sheriff is to recognize the men and women who put their lives on the line daily to protect the citizens we serve. This award can’t be over emphasized because it exemplifies the very best of our team. We are honored to have both men on our team at the Sheriff’s Office and I’m proud to announce their recognition as Law Enforcement Officer (s) of the year.”
The Manitowoc Eagles will honor them at the Manitowoc County Board Meeting on May 18th.
