Bail is set at $7500 recognizance bond for a 58-year-old Manitowoc man after allegedly physically attacking his wife last (Wednesday) night.
David J. Downs is charged with Strangulation, Battery and Disorderly Conduct all with Domestic Violence Enhancers.
Police responded to a call from a woman saying that she and her husband (Downs) had been drinking and she had gone upstairs to their room to bring him a drink. That’s when Downs allegedly threw her phone across the room and when she did likewise he got out of bed, grabbed her by the neck throwing her down the stairs and striking her head against the wall at the bottom. He allegedly threw a bottle at her which shattered upon impact.
He was not there when authorities arrived but was located later and taken into custody. Conditions of bail are that Downs have “no contact” with the victim, maintain absolute sobriety, go to the Manitowoc Police Department for photos and prints and provide the court a legitimate address by the end of the business day Monday.
His initial appearance is scheduled for May 17th at 1:30 PM.
