Many were in attendance this morning for a ribbon-cutting of a new Greenhouse at Grow It Forward’s Community Garden on South 14th Street in Manitowoc.
Executive Director Amber Daugs had a vision six years ago to increase local food production and provide year-round programming for the community. “Right now especially with the pandemic, there are several individuals who are facing food insecurity for the first time. The goal is not just to meet an immediate need but provide skills that can help end future hunger in the community.”
Mayor Justin Nickels says the passion of others made this a reality. “Amber coming to Council with this vision and idea and seeing the benefits provided to the community. What Grow It Forward has done to provide food to those in need especially during COVID is truly amazing. It’s fantastic when everyone can come together and make what was once a vision six years ago a reality today.”
Those in attendance were given a short tour and went home with free seeds. Costs were met by Grow It Forward along with the city and a grant from the West Foundation. Grow It Forward has distributed over 2 million pounds of food to those in need.
