The Robert E. Burns American Legion Post #165 is going to honor World War I veterans lost from Two Rivers in a June 12th ceremony.
According to Past Commander Rick Hendrickson, they’ll be dedicating a memorial plaque at 4815 Memorial Drive, in the Two Rivers wayside, adjacent to the “Spirit of the Rivers” monument.
Originally, American Legion Memorial Drive was named in honor of the Manitowoc County veterans who gave their lives in the First World War. And, then in the Fall of 1928 through community donations, 925 elm trees were planted on the drive from Roosevelt Avenue in Two Rivers to Reed Avenue in Manitowoc. Later that year, the Manitowoc County Board approved a resolution officially naming the lakeshore highway American Legion Memorial Drive.
The entire stretch contained a corridor of elm trees until a majority of them were ravaged by Dutch Elm disease.
Post #165 is asking area residents to join the American Legion and veterans on Saturday, June 12th at noon in the commemoration and remembrance of the men who gave-their-all for this nation.
Following the ceremony, lunch will be held for dignitaries at the Two Rivers Community House.
