The Manitowoc County Courthouse is always a busy place, and even with the pandemic shutting a lot of things down, that continued to be the case.
Manitowoc County District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre told Seehafer News that during the first few months of last year, including during the Safer at Home Order, her office continued to file what she termed “significant quantities of cases.”
“We thought there would be a dip, but there never really was,” LaBre said. “There were changes in the types of cases that were being filed, but I was surprised that our numbers stayed up.”
In fact, LaBre said they saw an uptick in one type of charge.
“We filed more felons last year than we did in previous years, which did surprise me,” she explained. “I thought with the lockdown that there would be less, but there wasn’t.”
LaBre called that statistic “unfortunate”.
The Manitowoc County Courthouse is now preparing to return to in-person court soon, which will make the District Attorney’s life much more hectic, as they have a backlog of trials they need to do. The cases that involve cases for people who are in custody on new charges, and cases where there are child victims.
