The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department has released the identities of the canoers that went missing on Lake Winnebago on Monday.
21-year-old men Dakota Goldapske and Michael Gohde were thrown from their vessel due to the waves created by the high wind and have yet to be located.
The rescue effort, which has since been reclassified as a recovery effort, has been described as “extremely risky” due to the continued presence of high winds, at some points gusting up to 35 mph.
The canoe and several personal items were located Monday evening, but crews continue to search for the men.
Sheriff’s Department personnel have been aided by the Wisconsin DNR.
