On March 24th, the Save Lives Act was signed into law, which allows the VA to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to veterans, their spouses, and caregivers.
Manitowoc County Veteran Services Officer Todd Brehmer said that his office has been getting calls about the law and that there are a few misconceptions.
While the law does state that all veterans are now eligible for the shot, there are a few caveats.
“This is a pilot program,” Brehmer explained, “and the priority is going to be given to veterans that are in VA healthcare enrollment already.”
Then they will focus on all veterans, then their caregivers and spouses as long as there are vaccines available.
Also, since it is a pilot program, it will not be available at all clinics or hospitals.
“There is going to be a few chosen ones,” the Veteran Service Officer explained. “The VA is going to work it and see how the communication, and operation staff work. Eventually, it will expand out into the community.”
Brehmer suggests that veterans that want to take advantage of the program be patient.
If you have any questions about the program, Brehmer suggests that you contact your VA clinic, and they will help you as best they can.
