Some people living in Fort Atkinson are asking why a Canadian oil company waited more than a year to notify the state about a pipeline leak.
Enbridge Energy’s Southern Lights Pipeline runs through south-central Wisconsin.
After the leak in April 2019, the company says it identified the problem and replaced a faulty valve.
About 30 barrels of a petroleum-based chemical spilled. Residents of Fort Atkinson are alarmed because the spill wasn’t reported until last July.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says its rules ask companies to report spills right away, but delays aren’t uncommon.
Enbridge is said to be proactive about investigating and fixing problems.
