A pair of local representatives in the state legislature have introduced a bill that aims to add higher weight restrictions for certain vehicles transporting maple sap or syrup.
Republicans Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere and Representative Shae Sortwell of Two Rivers have joined forces with Representative Clint Moses of Menomonie Wisconsin to introduce the bill.
Under the current law, vehicles transporting dairy products are allowed to carry a slightly higher amount of weight compared to maple sap and syrup trucks. The bill would increase the latter’s limit from 20,000 pounds per axel up to 21,000 pounds per axel.
Wisconsin is the fourth-largest producer of maple syrup in the country and the largest in the Midwest. The trio says this bill would help the truckers take fewer trips, and likely helping produce even more syrup.
