A woman who is looking to represent Manitowoc’s 1st Aldermanic District is due in court tomorrow (March 12th) in a theft case from last year.
Theresa Schmitt will be in front of Judge Robert Dewane at 10:00 AM for a plea hearing on two charges of retail theft, one felony, and one misdemeanor.
According to a police report from the incident, Officers were called to the Manitowoc Walmart just after 7:30 PM on June 11th of last year on a report of retail theft.
When they arrived, the Asset Protection Assistant Manager of the store told officers that this was the second time that Schmitt, referred to a Theresa Gregor in the report, had skipped scanning items.
The report indicates that she paid for roughly $54 worth of items, and failed to scan about $408 worth of items.
Schmitt was seen on video scanning smaller items and making it appear as though she was scanning larger items, thus skipping the scanning process for the more expensive items.
According to the police report, the first time Schmitt skipped scanning items, the total cost of the items she stole was just shy of $600.
Stealing under $500 in items is a misdemeanor, and $500 or more is a felony. Schmitt had her first appearance in court on December 7th, where she received a signature bond.
We verified that the suspect was Theresa Schmitt, despite the different last name in the police report, because in the court records she is known by both names, and her registered address is the same one held by the City of Manitowoc and in the court records.
