A local readers theatre group that began in Manitowoc in 1967 has been dissolved following the passing of its’ founder late last year, but the memory of Sally Semmes and Hatrack Storytellers will live on through a generous donation to Treehouse Theater.
Following a check presentation to Treehouse Executive Director Karen Rohrer at their beautifully renovated building at 910 Washington Street last night, Seehafer News spoke with Sheila Hansen, President of the Hatrack Board of Directors about how Sally would feel if she were still here today.
“She would so happy,” Hansen said. “The greatest gift is that she was with us when the decision was made with what she wanted to do with the final money in the Hatrack funds. And, this was her wish that the money went to Treehouse Theater, an organization doing so much good for kids in Manitowoc County.”
Hatrack Storytellers did hundreds of programs, many of which were led by Semmes herself, to help promote the joy and importance of reading. Rohrer explains she was one of those kids listening to Hatrack at the library but the connection went deeper.
“I learned so much from her through the years,” Rohrer explained. “We’ve spent many hours together just talking about things I could do differently, classes we could offer and life skills kids need to learn including diction so they can be understood by others.”
Rohrer said she plans to deposit the check into their student scholarship fund so low-income kids who wish to participate in any class or show at Treehouse will be able to do so.
