Holy Family Memorial has introduced ‘Functional Medicine” to its’ healthcare offerings.
Dr. Derek Bown provides the new services at the medical center’s Harbor Town Campus at 1650 S. 41st Street in Manitowoc. He terms it a “systems biology-based approach.”
“We’re not just targeting the liver for example. It’s how do these symptoms cross over and we are looking for the core problem and it’s based a lot on lifestyle and nutritional habits.”
Dr. Bown explains it as a multi-functional way of treating patients who may have a wide variety of health conditions, such as allergies, arthritis, diabetes, hormone imbalances, and thyroid issues.
“But it does get down to that core issue which was something we were sometimes missing. And it’s something we’re excited to bring to Holy Family and the patients and hopefully it’s something we can offer to the whole network.”
Dr. Bown says he’s been doing some nutritional counseling for about the past 11-or-12 years and as he took more coursework and attended more conferences, it was something he wanted to do above and beyond what he already does as a Chiropractor.
Bown says they will schedule appointments and consultations with people through his office at HFM Chiropractic by calling 320-4700.
