According to Manitowoc Fire Chief Todd Blaser, the two most common causes of house fires are the careless use of smoking materials and cooking food on the stove.
Chief Blaser explained to Seehafer News how you can help make sure your home does not become the next victim of a fire, saying “If you smoke in your home please extinguish all cigarette butts properly and when entertaining make sure proper containers and means to completely put them out.”
If your home were to catch fire, having a functioning smoke detector can be the difference in life or death.
With Daylight Savings Time to begin at 2 a.m. Sunday Blaser says it’s a good time to make sure your smoke detectors are working properly. He called it the “perfect time to change out the batteries in your smoke detectors and test them to make sure they’re working and to sit down with your family to talk about your escape plan in case of a fire.”
The Manitowoc Fire Chief adds at minimum, “You really should have one in and just outside each sleeping room and keep them at least ten feet away from your stove to avoid false alarms when you overheat your food.”
Any questions or concerns about your smoke detector can be directed to the Fire Department at 686-6540.
