Six Dr. Suess titles were recently pulled from publication after Dr. Suess Enterprises said they portrayed some ethnicities in “hurtful and wrong” ways.
Despite that, the Algoma Public Library will continue to lend out the titles in question.
A library administrator said that they, as a policy, do not pull such books, but do have a procedure in place for patrons who have an issue with a title.
Anyone can file a “Statement of Concern” with the library board, who will then look over the concern, and determine if the title needs to be removed.
The books that will no longer be published include popular titles such as “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, and “If I Ran the Zoo”, as well as some less known titles like “McElligot’s Pool”, “On Beyond Zebra!”, “Scrambled Eggs Super!”, and “The Cat’s Quizzer”, which features the iconic Cat in the Hat.
