The assignment is clear, if not easy.
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has to find $15-million in salary-cap space over the next two weeks. That’s when all N-F-L teams have to have their top 51 contracts under the cap.
Gutekunst has several options as he makes sure the Packers are in compliance.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has a $6.8 million roster bonus due March 19th – when the new N-F-L year starts. The Packers can save more than $4.4 million by converting that into a signing bonus.
That’s what they did with tackle David Bakhtiari’s roster bonus.
Although the Packers are the only team dating back 10 years that hasn’t franchise tagged a player, Gutekunst could decide to do that with running back Aaron Jones.
