Public health officials say the U-K variant of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Dane County. Thursday’s news release indicated the person who tested positive for the variant had no recent travel history outside the US.
The strain circulated widely in England near the end of last year. Researchers say it is likely more contagious and spreads more rapidly than the original strain. Public Health Madison and Dane County Director Janel Heinrich says the department has been operating under the assumption that the variant is already present. It was first confirmed in Wisconsin last month.
