Three local youth hockey teams have thrived this year and look to cap off their seasons with a State Championship.
We sat down with the coach and some players from all three teams and will have reports with all of them this week. Today we start with the Manitowoc Breakers Squirt C team, which consists of children aged 10 and under.
This team earned their way to State thanks to a come from behind double-overtime victory over Oshkosh.
Assistant Coach Ryan O’Rourke said the team has really grown this year. “We started out a little rough, but they really improved as the year went on,” O’Rourke explained. “We lost our first game I think 11-1, but since then they have really taken off. We’ve won 16 games on the year, with a couple of big comebacks, and our win to go to State was amazing.”
Aislyn O’Rourke agreed, recalling her reaction to the game winning goal going in the net. “It was pretty exciting when we got the goal that won,” Aislyn said. “I remember I jumped and slipped and fell. We kept re-watching it and thought it was really funny.”
We also spoke with Braxton Hicks, who called going to state “exciting” and said it is his favorite part of the season so far.
The Breakers will battle the other top teams in Wisconsin starting March 6th.
