A man has been taken into custody by the Manitowoc Police Department on a charge of armed robbery.
The robbery occurred back on September 14th at the Baymont Inn on Maritime Drive. Officers responded to the hotel just before 3:00 AM, and the clerk on duty said that the man, who appeared to be Hispanic, entered the building holding a $20 bill. He then asked for change while holding a folding knife.
When the clerk opened the drawer, the suspect demanded all the money. The clerk told the suspect that all the money was in a safe in the office and that he would go retrieve it. When the clerk entered the office, he locked the door behind him and called 9-1-1.
Investigators determined the suspect had driven to the hotel in a red Pontiac Grand Prix, and on Monday (February 8th) located the vehicle in Sheboygan. Officers went to his home, and the suspect admitted to attempting to rob the hotel.
As of now, the only charge the 36-year-old man is facing is Attempted Armed Robbery.
