Yesterday afternoon (February 9th), the three candidates vying to represent Manitowoc’s 3rd Aldermanic District on the City Council sat down for a debate on WOMT and WCUB Radio.
Moderator Brian Norton asked all of them one simple question, “Why do you want to be on the City Council?”
Theresa Collins, the owner of Beacon Consulting in Manitowoc, said she is qualified for the position and is already rather active in the Council Chambers. “I am truly passionate about the issues in Manitowoc, and I have demonstrated that throughout the years,” Collins explained. “You can often see me in City Hall during Council meeting giving my public input statement and truly advocating for others.”
Mike Cummings was next to respond, and he recalled a saying his father always told him, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” Cummings quipped that he is “too slow to get out of the way, and when I follow, then I am held by parameters. So I would rather lead, and make sure that in the unexpected, I know myself, and I know that we can maintain calm…and do whatever the right thing is.”
Angela Meyers responded by saying it is simple, she wants to make a difference. “I want us to be proud of where we come from and change the things that are going on locally so that we can come together instead of dividing,” Meyers said. “There has been too much division in our city and in our country recently, and we need to do something to get us to come together.
The top two vote-getters in the Spring Primary on February 16th will remain on the ballot for the April 6th General Election.
There is another debate scheduled for this afternoon at 1:00 PM on 107.9 FM WOMT and 97.1 FM WCUB, as Incumbent Aaron Bailey, along with challengers Scott Pelott and Tim Boldt will engage in a battle of words as they look to represent the 7th Aldermanic District.
